Ravel: Piece en forme de habanera (with Julian Joseph)

"Julian Joseph… one of the finest pianists since Thelonius Monk" Daily Telegraph
British jazz pianist, Julian Joseph joins Matthew Barley for their first concert at Kings Place, London. They perform new material from their dazzling new Signum Records release, ‘Dance of the Three Legged Elephants’.
Close friends and musical collaborators, Matthew and Julian explore the traditions from which their music-making has individually evolved, in a series of imaginative improvisations and arrangements.
Barley describes the inclusion of the Ravel Piece en Forme de Habanera as ‘completing the picture’ of the relationship between the classical sensibility and the improvised jazz response. Ravel, absorbed the habanera music as a folk style into a classical framework in this piece – the starting point for this contemplative and moving exploration.
